Course Description

Clinical Neurology and Psychiatry for Psychiatrists (CNPP) is the most important, intensive, dynamic five-day review course available. Offered for over 45 years, it has been revamped for the new ABPN certification format. Using an anonymous audience response system, CNPP uses a question and answer format combined with didactics to engage the learner and comprehensively review topics in neurology and psychiatry most relevant to the revised exam. CNPP stresses the clinical features, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Topics include dementia from a variety of illnesses, aphasia, anosognosia and other perceptual disorders, TBI, seizure disorders, antiepileptic drugs, neurotransmitters, neuroanatomy and neurological testing including CT, MRI, EEG and lumbar puncture. The course also reviews expectable changes and illnesses of childhood and old age.

The interactive presentations, discussions and explanations will stress the main areas of psychiatry: basic science, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Questions using audio, visual, and written vignettes are designed to familiarize participants with the Part C of the examination.

An experienced and well-informed faculty will discuss the examination format, process, and test-taking strategies, and offer helpful insights throughout the course. The faculty will emphasize subjects that are critical, complicated, or otherwise important. They will not belabor the obvious or dwell on the esoteric.

Educational Materials

Attendees will receive syllabi upon check-in and the newest edition of Dr. David M. Kaufman’s Clinical Neurology for Psychiatrists (9th edition, Elsevier), mailed prior to the course, for early reading.

Educational Objectives and Expected Outcome

CNPP will prepare attendees for the new ABPN CERTIFICATION examination and offer a review of modern neurology and psychiatry. Attendees will improve their diagnostic skills, be brought up-to-date, and guided toward best practices.
